Herndon Dogs Welcomes You to the Chandon Park Off-Leash Dog Exercise Area!

Dog parks provide many benefits to our canine companions, the people who love them, and the community as a whole! The creation of this dog park was a three and a half-year cooperative effort between Herndon Dogs, Inc. (HDI), the Town of Herndon, and the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA).

The work is not over - the Chandon Park Dog Park needs your cooperation to make it (and keep it) a success!

How You Can Help:

Know and Follow the Rules. Please read FCPA’s Dog Park Rules and HDI’s Dog Park Etiquette. Please contact Herndon Dogs, Inc. at (703) 578-0522 (mailbox 7) if you have any questions or comments on these materials.

Help Enforce the Rules. Don’t rely on others to keep the dog park safe and clean. Setting a good example for other users is the first step, but helping new users understand proper dog park etiquette will strengthen the dog park “community.” Voice your support to other users for keeping the dog park a clean/safe environment for our canine companions.

Spread the Word! Tell your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers - everyone - about this wonderful place where dogs can run and play off-leash as well as socialize with other dogs and people!

The loss of open land in our area and the increased density of the human population have reduced the area in which owners can walk and exercise their dogs.

Lifestyle changes (i.e., smaller homes and yards, the increased number of households in which no one is home during the day, etc.) have created a need for alternative ways for dog lovers to exercise and socialize their dogs adequately.

Report Problems. As the sponsor group, Herndon Dogs, Inc. needs to be aware of any dog park issues. Contact information and forms are available at the kiosk. We also have a voice mail line where you can leave information, questions, comments, and suggestions: (703) 578-0522, mailbox 7.

If you observe any suspicious behavior (either inside or outside the dog park) and feel threatened, please contact the Herndon Police immediately at (703) 435-6846. If neither you nor anyone in the dog park has a cell phone, wait inside the dog park until someone who does arrives.

Donate Your Plastic Bags. There are receptacles where bags can be stored next to each trash can. If everyone does their part in donating bags, park users will always be able to pick up after their dog(s). A clean dog park is vital to success.

Pick up “Unclaimed” Poop. Even when owners make every effort to monitor their dog(s), it is possible that they may not see their dog poop and not pick it up. Please try first to identify and notify the owner. If you cannot find the owner please pick up any poop that you see lying on the ground for longer than it would take for the owner to get a bag and pick it up. Remember, at another time it could be someone else picking up after your dog on an occasion when you were distracted…

Do Not Allow Your Dog to Bark Continuously. Although some barking is to be expected in a dog park, continuous barking must be controlled. Herndon Dogs has a established a good relationship with the neighboring community, however, that could change if dog park users do not try to limit the amount of barking.

Make a Donation. Unlike other recreation facilities, dog parks are built and enhanced by donations, not tax dollars. To keep our dog park clean, maintained, and (hopefully) improved, we need donations from the public. Monetary support can be mailed to Herndon Dogs, Inc., PO Box 250, Herndon, VA 20172-0250.

Join Herndon Dogs, Inc. The best way to be actively and directly involved in the success of the dog park is to join Herndon Dogs, Inc. You will be kept abreast of all the latest developments and can take an active roll in the dog park success and future enhancements!
